Automated test centre for German steel manufacturer

Hegewald & Peschke develops and delivers new automation concept

Hegewald & Peschke has successfully handed over a test centre for automated tensile tests to a German steel manufacturer. In addition to the steelworks, the production site includes a rolling mill (continuous wire mill) as well as mesh and stretching lines. Continuous cast billets in the 130x130 mm format with lengths of 9 to 12 m are produced, which are then rolled into smooth or ribbed wire rod with a coil weight of 1,500 kg. In addition, reinforcing steel bearing meshes with package weights of approx. 2.5 t and reinforcing steel in coils of 2.5 to 5 t are produced. In addition to Germany, the recipients include other European countries such as Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden as well as overseas markets (USA, Central America) and Africa (Algeria, Nigeria).

The customer-specific concept developed by Hegewald & Peschke is based entirely on the special testing requirements of the customer.

The automated test cell for tensile tests on reinforcing steel and wire samples consists of a 250kN universal testing machine with hydraulic fixtures from Hegewald & Peschke, a robot, a sample recognition station, a sample rack and a scrap container. The cross-section determination during the tensile test is carried out by means of a scale and a length measuring system. The complete control of the test cell is realized by the company's own software LabMaster. Especially the proprietary software LabMaster from Hegewald & Peschke offers the customer a tailor-made solution for data handling.

The project was used to develop a new Hegewald & Peschke automation concept with a focus on industrial automation communicating via BUS systems. Hegewald & Peschke concentrates the know-how for this in house. Both the mechanical design of the test cell and the individual components, the electrical design, the PLC programming and the software implementation are carried out independently. This provides excellent conditions for servicing the complex automation cells as well as for possible future adaptations.
