Hegewald & Peschke MPT GmbH successfully delivered a 5kN universal testing machine (UTM) to the European Organization of Nuclear Research, short CERN.

CERN has the strongest particle accelerator in the world trying to answer fundamental questions of particle physics.

The UTM delivered by H&P is equipped with a lifting platform, a cryostat and specifically developed bollard grips integrated into a reverse frame to allow low temperature testing between -196°C and 25°C.

The machine is utilized for studying the degradation of state-of-the-art high temperature superconductors under uniaxial tensile loading by combined high resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and macroscopic stress-strain measurements.

Beyond the determination of Youngs modulus at 77 K investigations towards the degradation of the critical current density (Ic) under mechanical loading due to Lorentz forces as a major concern for the application of high temperature superconductors in future very high field magnets is of interest.
